Northern Transformer Breaks Ground on $207M High-Voltage Transformer Plant in Ontario
Northern Transformer Corporation, a leading Canadian manufacturer of high-voltage power transformers, has officially broken ground on a new $207 million manufacturing facility in Innisfil, Ontario. This marks a major expansion in the company's large power transformer capabilities and a significant boost to Canada's energy infrastructure and supply chain.
The 183,000-square-foot facility will produce and test 230-500kV class power transformers with capacities up to 750 MVA. Designed with advanced features including ultra-clean environments and an isolated, extra-high voltage testing lab, the plant is strategically located on a rail-accessible site for efficient North American distribution.
The facility, expected to begin operations in 2028, has received financial backing from both federal and provincial governments. FedDev Ontario is contributing $6 million, while the Government of Ontario has pledged $10.5 million, pending final agreement.
Alexei Miecznikowski, CEO of Northern Transformer, emphasized the project's importance in meeting rising demand for critical energy infrastructure. "This investment not only boosts our production capacity but also drives job creation and supply chain growth," he said.
Key partners include Hydro One, OPG, Bruce Power, and the Town of Innisfil, all of whom are actively supporting the expansion.
The move positions Northern Transformer as a vital player in the North American grid modernization and electrification drive.
