Northern Powergrid trials new transformers to cut power losses

6 Dec 2019

NORTHUMBERLAND, UK - Northern Powergrid, an electrical distribution network operator (DNO) based in Newcastle Upon Tyne in England, is trialing a new type of transformer that it says could dramatically reduce power losses.

According to the operator, the low loss ground-mounted amorphous transformers (AMTs) can reduce core losses by up to 90%, compared to the older ground-mounted distribution transformers they will replace, reports Network.

The transformers, manufactured by Leeds-based Wilson Power Solutions, will be installed at five sites where Northern Powergrid will monitor their performance over the next 12 months, using noise testing, thermal imaging and power quality testing.

The outcomes will be shared as a UK case study for DNOs together with commercial and industrial users.

Learnings from the trial will inform the DNO on whether to include the technology in future transformers' specifications.
