Northern Ontario Wires Breaks Ground on New Cochrane Transformer Station
Northern Ontario Wires Inc. (NOW Inc.) has broken ground on a new municipal transformer station in Cochrane, Ontario, as part of an investment to strengthen local electricity infrastructure and support future demand growth.
The New Cochrane Municipal Transformer Station project is being developed to replace aging infrastructure and improve the reliability of the local distribution system. The need for the project was identified due to the condition of the existing station and anticipated increases in electricity demand.
Northern Ontario Wires, which serves the communities of Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, and parts of Kapuskasing, owns and operates the local electricity distribution infrastructure. The new transformer station is expected to enhance system capacity and provide additional flexibility as electricity needs evolve in the region.
The project is planned to enter service in 2029, according to filings with the Ontario Energy Board. Northern Ontario Wires will continue to provide updates on the project's scope, costs, and progress as construction advances.
The investment reflects broader efforts by utilities across North America to modernize aging electrical infrastructure, improve grid reliability, and prepare distribution networks for changing load requirements.
