NKT Tests World’s Longest Superconducting Power Cable

11 Oct 2024
NKT and Stadtwerke München Infrastruktur, along with partners, have inaugurated the test system for the world's longest superconducting power cable, known as SuperLink, in Munich, Germany. The 110 kV cable system represents a groundbreaking innovation in energy transmission.

The test system is a major milestone in the development of the 15-kilometer underground SuperLink, expected to become the longest superconducting power cable once fully operational. The project will address grid congestion in Munich and enable more efficient and climate-friendly electricity transmission. SuperLink will have a power rating of 500 MW and feature a cooling system to maintain the cable at -200ºC.

This project highlights the potential of superconducting technology to enhance grid efficiency and support the energy transition in large urban areas like Munich, which face increasing demand for renewable electricity.
