Nigeria-Siemens Power Initiative Makes Progress in Phase 1, Boosting Power Capacity

19 May 2023

The Federal Government of Nigeria Power Company has announced that the Nigeria-Siemens Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) project is well underway and has achieved significant milestones in Phase 1.

The pilot project aims to address major constraints in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry by deploying power transformers and mobile substations across the country to enhance power transmission capacity.

Kenny Anuwe, the managing director of the company, stated that approximately 80% of the equipment for the pilot project has been received and is being deployed to critical sites nationwide. These sites include Apo, Ajah, Okene, Nike Lake, Kwanar Dangora, Maryland, Omouaran, Ojo, Amukpe, Ihovbor, Potiskum, and Birnin Kebbi. The overall objective of the Nigeria-Siemens PPI is to increase the end-to-end operational capacity to 7,000MW, a substantial improvement from the current capacity of about 5,000MW, with subsequent phases targeting even greater capacity expansion.

Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project remains a crucial program for Nigeria's power sector. Successful implementation of Phase 1 will result in the delivery of an additional 2,000MW of power, two million new connections to the national grid, training for over 5,000 engineers, and improved access to electricity for millions of Nigerians. The commitment of the Federal Government of Nigeria, Siemens A.G, and Siemens Energy to the project remains unwavering, ensuring the continued progress and development of the power sector in the country.
