Nexans Launches Crucial Phase: Moray West Wind Farm Export Cables Pull-In Underway

14 Nov 2023

Nexans has marked a significant milestone in the development of the 882 MW Moray West offshore wind farm off the coast of Scotland by commencing the pull-in of the first of two export cables. Manufactured at Nexans' Halden factory under a 2021 contract with Ocean Winds, the Nexans Skaggerak and Nexans Aurora vessels will lay and bury these offshore cables.

Once completed, the cables will link the onshore export cables above the cliffs on the Aberdeenshire coast with the recently manufactured offshore substations in northeastern England.

The Moray West offshore wind farm, situated in the Moray Firth, is approximately 22.5 kilometers from the Caithness coastline. Boskalis, the company installing the monopile foundation, will also handle the Offshore Transformer Modules (OTMs). The project, featuring 60 Siemens Gamesa 14.7 MW wind turbines, is on track for full operational capacity in 2025. Commissioned by Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP Renewables and ENGIE, with a minority stake from UAB Ignitis Renewables, Moray West is projected to supply electricity to around 650,000 Scottish households for 25 years.
