New Transformer Has Arrived At National Grid’s Wymondley UK Station
Collett & Sons Ltd has completed the setup of a 120-tonne transformer at a National Grid substation in Wymondley, marking the final phase of a multi-stage transport and placement project.
The transformer, supplied by Hyosung Heavy Industries UK, was originally delivered to the site in 2025 using a 250-tonne girder frame trailer. Collett’s team later returned to carry out the final setup works.
The operation involved lifting the transformer from a temporary bund using specialist jacking and skidding equipment before transferring it onto a 6-axle self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT). The unit was then moved across the substation and carefully positioned onto its final plinth.
The project highlights the role of heavy transport and specialist logistics providers in supporting critical energy infrastructure projects across the UK.
