New step-up transformers, circuit breakers and synchronous condensers for Brindisi substation in southern Italy

15 May 2020

Italian transmission system operator (TSO) Terna is upgrading its Brindisi substation in southern Italy with new step-up transformers, circuit breakers and two synchronous condensers and flywheel units.

The equipment will be supplied by GE which will be responsible for the design, civil works, supply, installation and commissioning of step-up transformers, generator circuit breakers and two electrical two-pole generators.

Synchronous condensers are designed to quickly regulate the energy parameters of the transmission network, regulate the voltage and improve the energy factor. They will be installed at strategic locations along Terna's transmission system to enable the production or absorption of reactive power to maintain stable power flow to the grid.

The new equipment will support the integration of more renewable energy and help stabilize Italy's grid.
