New Milwaukee substation improves electric reliability

15 Sep 2021

MILWAUKEE, USA -- According to the company, due to its location in a dense urban neighborhood, east of the Milwaukee River, the project was challenging but enabled them to identify opportunities for improvement.

According to WEC Energy Group, the Juneautown substation project was unlike any they had performed before. The 138/13.2-kV substation was built partially below ground, enclosed within a building and was part of a larger residential and commercial development.

Among other challenges, a new transmission line had to be routed under the Milwaukee River and through streets already packed with underground infrastructure and a small, workable floor plan had to be designed to fit architecturally and structurally into the mixed-use development.

According to the company the project should improve switching options, provide capacity for load growth and mitigate risk associated with electric distribution river crossings. The new substation consists of a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) with two 65-MVA transformers and a 13.2-kV switchgear with ultimate capacity for 20 distribution feeders and We Energies and ATC would jointly own and operate the substation.
