New Micro Substation to Power Remote India

12 Sep 2024
Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL) and Nissin Electric Co have launched a demonstration project for India's first micro substation. The project aims to provide stable, cost-effective electricity to remote areas lacking access to the power grid. The initiative is part of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) International Demonstration Project, focusing on Japan's energy efficiency technologies.

The micro substation, designed with a Power Voltage Transformer (PVT), can directly step down high-voltage electricity from transmission lines to low-voltage power suitable for residential use. This eliminates the need for constructing large, expensive power networks. The pilot project, set to begin operations in March 2025, will install a 100 kVA micro substation on the outskirts of Delhi, stepping down 3-phase 66kV to 1-phase 240V power, all within a compact 40 square meter area.

Gajanan S Kale, CEO of Tata Power-DDL, emphasized the project's alignment with the company's commitment to sustainable and reliable power for remote regions. The technology is also expected to assist in disaster recovery.

Kenji Kobayashi, Managing Director of Nissin Electric, highlighted the contribution this project will make to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including affordable and clean energy. Nissin Electric, in partnership with Tata Power-DDL, will monitor environmental compliance and power quality, expanding this technology to other regions facing similar challenges.

This project marks a major step forward in India's energy infrastructure development, with potential for further expansion both within the country and internationally.
