New indigenous 660kn technology creates leap in China-Pakistan HVDC Project

The project was put into commercial operation in September 2021 and plays a crucial role in linking Gwadar port in Pakistan with Kashgar in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, focusing on energy, transport, and industrial cooperation.




The Matiari-Lahore High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission project, funded, constructed, and operated by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, has achieved significant milestones. According to Shan Shewu, chairman of China Electric Power Technology and Equipment Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of SGCC, this project is the first outside China to adopt 660-kilovolt direct current technology with complete Chinese intellectual property rights. The project was put into commercial operation in September 2021 and plays a crucial role in linking Gwadar port in Pakistan with Kashgar in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, focusing on energy, transport, and industrial cooperation.

The converter transformers, a vital component of the project, were developed in China's Xi'an, and Xian XD Transformer Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China XD Electric Co., Ltd., produced 28 converter transformers and 47 reactors for the project. The design team of XD Group optimized the components and installation method to withstand the hot climate in the eastern part of Pakistan, where temperatures often exceed 50 degrees Celsius in summer. Since its safe operation commencement over 1,000 days ago, the project has transmitted 26.8 billion kWh of electricity, providing power to 10 million households in Lahore and its surrounding areas, and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region. The successful implementation of this project also reinforces the intertwined development between Lahore and Xi'an, which became sister cities in 1992.
