New 168-Tonne Transformer Powers Stanwell

8 Oct 2024
A 60-metre 'super-load' delivered a new multi-million-dollar power transformer to Stanwell Power Station on Tuesday, enhancing the reliability of energy supply. The 168-tonne package traveled more than 2,500 kilometers across three states before arriving in Central Queensland.

This state-of-the-art transformer, part of a $10 million project, serves as a critical backup to ensure the stability of the grid. Built by Wilson Transformer Company in Melbourne, the transformer is essential for converting generator output voltage from 20kV to 275kV, enabling energy to be efficiently connected to the grid.

The new transformer will support the National Electricity Market by providing operational flexibility to the Stanwell Power Station, helping manage fluctuations in energy demand. It also plays a key role in ensuring minimal downtime during peak demand periods.

Angie Zahra, General Manager of Central Queensland Generation, emphasized the importance of strategic planning in maintaining grid stability. She stated, "Having a backup transformer means Stanwell is well-equipped to handle peak demands and maintain energy security."
