New 100 MVA Transformer Boosts Iloilo City’s Power Reliability

15 Apr 2025
ILOILO CITY - The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) and MORE Electric and Power Corp. (MORE Power) have energized a new 100-megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformer at the NGCP substation in Iloilo City, doubling the station's capacity from 50 MVA to 100 MVA.

The upgrade is a key response to the city's increasing energy demands, aimed at strengthening power reliability and supporting economic growth. Roel Castro, President of MORE Power, emphasized that the expanded capacity will enhance service, particularly for the Megaworld and Jaro substations.

"This is a significant step forward in ensuring a reliable and robust power grid for Iloilo City," said Castro. "This upgrade will provide the necessary capacity to support the city's growth and attract new investments."

The transformer energization is part of a broader initiative to achieve 3x100 MVA capacity. A second transformer upgrade is planned before the end of 2025, with the full 3x100 MVA target set for completion in 2026.

The move follows past concerns about power shortages and rotating blackouts due to delays in infrastructure projects. Castro noted that this progress highlights collaboration across sectors to ensure Iloilo's energy future is secure and sustainable.

"This is a win-win situation for everyone," he added. "It shows that we are all working together to build a brighter future for Iloilo City."
