NeuConnect Delivers All 14 Transformers for UK-Germany Interconnector Project

12 May 2026

The NeuConnect interconnector project has reached a significant construction milestone following the delivery of all 14 transformers to converter station sites in the UK and Germany.

The project, which will create the first direct electricity connection between the two countries, is designed to transmit up to 1.4 GW of power through a 725-kilometre high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable.

According to project developers, the transformers were manufactured by Siemens Energy and transported to the converter stations located at Isle of Grain in Kent, UK, and Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany. Seven transformers were delivered to each site.

The transformer deliveries form part of ongoing construction work on the estimated £2.4 billion energy infrastructure project, which aims to strengthen cross-border electricity trading and support the integration of renewable energy into European power networks.

Each transformer reportedly weighs more than 200 tonnes and measures approximately seven metres in length and five metres in height, requiring specialised transportation and installation procedures.

Construction activity is continuing across both onshore and offshore sections of the project. Subsea cable installation contractor Prysmian has already completed cable laying operations in UK waters, while work continues in Dutch and German waters.

Meanwhile, construction of the converter station structures at both locations has also progressed, with both facilities now reaching their full structural height.

Once operational, the interconnector is expected to provide enough electricity capacity to power approximately 1.5 million homes. The project is currently scheduled to enter operation in 2028.

NeuConnect is one of several major European interconnection projects being developed to improve grid resilience, enhance energy security, and facilitate the expansion of renewable energy generation across regional electricity markets.
