National Grid UK delivers 155-tonne transformer

9 Mar 2022

UK - National Grid in collaboration with the heavy haulage company Allelys and Coventry City Council delivered a 155-tonne power transformer to Berkswell Substation near Coventry, England.

National Grid UK delivered a power transformer to the Berkswell Substation to meet extra demand in the Coventry and Warwickshire areas.

The unit was delivered on a specialist vehicle which is more than 5 metres tall, 5 metres wide and 58 metres long and travelled at approximately 12 miles per hour, National Grid said in a press release.

Although there were no road closures, due to the size of the delivery vehicle carrying the transformer, National Grid worked closely with National Highways and carefully planned the route with the specialist haulage contractors Allelys, and Coventry City Council to minimise the disruption to road users and residents.

The vehicle also had police accompaniment to help manage traffic and make the process as smooth and safe as possible.

"Millions of people rely on us to supply their electricity without interruption, day in, day out so it's important that we keep our substations and the equipment in them working efficiently," said National Grid project manager Graham Horrocks.

The transformer delivery is not connected to HS2 work in the area and will not impact electricity supply in the area, National Grid said in a press release.
