National Grid ET to invest $9.3b in transmission system of the future

5 Jul 2019

UNITED KINGDOM - National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) has unveiled plans to spend $9.3 billion (£7.4 billion) to establish the "future electricity transmission system".

In the first draft of its RIIO-T2 business plan, NGET detailed how it will invest in and operate England and Wales' electricity transmission system over the next delivery period from 2021 - 2026, reports Current.

The plan outlines three specific priorities - delivering a sustainable, affordable and reliable energy system, and provides a detailed breakdown of how the total $9.3 billion figure will be spent over the five-year period (around $1.88 billion each year).

As it stands, National Grid ET is expected to invest the $946 million earmarked for network reinforcements to create and enable integration of 20.8 GW of additional renewable power across England and Wales.

Also, a portion of the $780 million set aside for protecting the network from external threats will be spent on ramping up the transmission system's cyber capability.

NGET is requesting feedback on its draft business plan, which will be accepted until 9 August 2019, prior to a second draft which is due for publication in October.
