National Grid Reveals Plans for Two New Lincolnshire Substations

28 Nov 2025
National Grid has revealed proposals to build two new electricity substations at separate sites in Weston Marsh, Lincolnshire, as part of plans to strengthen the UK’s electricity grid.

The first, Weston Marsh Substation A, would connect to the Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind Farm and the proposed Walpole to Grimsby overhead lines, located east of Marsh Road near Surfleet Seas End. The tallest equipment would reach 12.5 metres, with overhead gantries up to 15 metres on a 10.6-hectare site. The project would be built in two phases, starting with the wind farm connection by 2028 and completing the overhead lines by 2033.

The second, Weston Marsh Substation B, would serve proposed new East Leicestershire overhead lines, north of Stone Gate and east of Marsh Road near the Moulton Seas End junction. Covering 8.4 hectares, it will include connection points for solar, battery storage, and other energy projects. Both substations would use Air Insulated Switchgear, with most equipment outdoors.

National Grid says the sites were selected to avoid constraints such as pumping stations, gas pipelines, and protected buildings, and will feature new planting and landscaping to reduce visual impact.

The company highlighted that electricity demand in Lincolnshire and the UK is expected to double by 2050, requiring grid expansion to connect cleaner, homegrown energy and support regional jobs and investment.

A new public consultation is open until 11.59pm on Friday, December 19, with in-person sessions at Weston Village Hall (Nov 28) and Moulton Seas End Village Hall (Nov 29), plus an online webinar on Dec 3. Project plans are also available in Spalding and Long Sutton public libraries.

Ben Ridgeon, project director for the Grimsby to Walpole line, emphasized the importance of community feedback to ensure the substations meet local and national energy needs.
