National Grid Prepares Transformer Delivery for Newport Substation Upgrade

28 Jul 2026

National Grid is preparing to deliver a new power transformer to its Imperial Park 400 kV substation in Newport, Wales, as part of an upgrade intended to support new electricity connections and increasing demand on the transmission network. The delivery is scheduled for 1 August.

The transformer will be transported from ABP's Port of Newport to the substation by heavy haulage specialist Collett & Sons under a full police escort. It will be the first of two planned transformer deliveries for the site. The journey is expected to begin at approximately 9:00 a.m., with arrival at the substation between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

According to National Grid, the new transformer will increase the capacity and resilience of the existing substation, enabling additional grid connections while supporting reliable electricity transmission. Once delivered, the unit will be moved into position before installation and commissioning.

In a statement, Paul Taunton, Lead EPC Project Manager at National Grid, said: "This transformer delivery is an important milestone in our work to reinforce the electricity network and enable new customer connections while supporting growing demand for electricity."

The delivery route and schedule have been coordinated with local authorities and police to minimise disruption. The specialist transport vehicle is expected to travel at speeds between 15 and 30 mph, depending on road conditions.
