National Grid moves power transformer to substation in Worcestershire

7 Apr 2022

UK - National Grid will be moving a transformer from its Sundon substation in Chalton, Bedfordshire to Feckenham substation in Worcestershire.

Originally planned for last month, the movement will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2022. The transformer will replace the ageing equipment at Feckenham substation to strengthen the electricity system in the region.

The transformer will be transported on a 65-meter (71-yd) long specialist vehicle, travelling at a maximum speed of 20mph.

Leaving the A38 at the B4065 junction, the transporter will approach Feckenham from Droitwich Spa along Hanbury Road/Salt Way (B4090). It is expected that the transformer will be delivered to Feckenham by approximately 6.30pm, National Grid said in a press release.

Edward Gomersall, project engineer for National Grid says: "This transformer movement has been many months in the planning, and we've worked hard to try and minimise any disruption deliveries of this kind can cause. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the local community during this vital work ensuring the resilience of our energy network."

Residents and businesses along the route have been advised to avoid parking on the road while the transporter convoy passes their property. Individuals planning to travel along the route of the transformer movement are recommended to try to find alternative routes or allow additional journey time.

The vehicle will have a police escort to help manage traffic and some street furniture along the route will be temporarily removed to ensure the transporter convoy is able to progress safely.
