National Grid Delivers Transformer as Part of Yorkshire GREEN Project
A 200-tonne "supergrid transformer" is scheduled to travel from Teesport Docks to Overton Substation in North Yorkshire on Sunday, October 5, as part of National Grid's Yorkshire GREEN Energy Enablement Project.
The transformer will be transported on an 80-metre-long specialist vehicle under police escort. The convoy will follow the A174 and A19, passing Thirsk, Thormanby and Shipton before reaching its destination.
Motorists are being warned to expect rolling road closures, parking restrictions and delays, with temporary changes to road signs and street furniture required at certain points. The convoy is due to leave Teesport at 7am, but this may change depending on weather and police availability.
The transformer is the sixth of eight units being delivered by October 2025 -- four to Overton and four to Monk Fryston Substation.
Yorkshire GREEN project
Yorkshire GREEN is a major scheme to reinforce Yorkshire's high-voltage electricity network, enabling greater transfer of clean energy across the UK. Works include:
-
Two new substations at Overton and Monk Fryston
-
28km of strengthened overhead lines and 10km of new lines
-
1km of underground cables
-
33 new pylons
-
Minor upgrades at Osbaldwick Substation
The project is part of The Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of the electricity transmission system in decades. It supports the UK's efforts to expand homegrown power and ensure the network can handle future demand.
