National Grid Delivers Supergrid Transformer for UK Project
A 200-tonne supergrid transformer was transported through North Yorkshire on July 6 as part of National Grid's Yorkshire GREEN energy upgrade project. The delivery triggered several rolling road closures and temporary traffic adjustments along the route.
The transformer, one of eight set for delivery to new substations in Overton and Monk Fryston by October 2025, is a key component in efforts to reinforce the high-voltage network across the region. The massive unit was moved on an 80-metre specialist vehicle at reduced speed, escorted by police from Teesport Docks via the A19, passing Thirsk, Thormanby, and Shipton by Beningbrough, before turning onto Overton Road.
To accommodate the abnormal load, authorities temporarily removed street furniture--including road signs and benches--and introduced parking restrictions in certain areas.
Martin McGready, National Grid Project Director, stated that the transformers are "essential to our project to upgrade and reinforce the high-voltage energy network in Yorkshire and further afield."
This delivery marks a milestone in the Yorkshire GREEN initiative, part of National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade, which aims to modernize infrastructure and ensure reliable energy transmission throughout the UK.
Letters were issued to residents along the route in advance of the move, and a dedicated community relations team is available for queries.
