Multiple transformers experience damage leaving 39,000 D.C. residents without power

29 Jul 2019

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Around 39,000 Pepco customers were left without power in D.C. after a Saturday afternoon outage caused by an electrical fault at the Pepco substation on Florida Avenue.

Pepco officials said that the electrical fault caused extensive damage to multiple transformers leaving nearly 40,000 D.C. residents without power. The largest impacted areas were the direct areas surrounding Howard University, reports WJLA.

Pepco is investigating the incident and will determine if the outage was preventable.

The crews are working on bringing in a new transformer, which will take a few days to start operating. In the meantime, temporary transformers mounted to tractor-trailers will be brought in.
