The Madhya Pradesh Transmission Company (MP Transco) has announced the implementation of a comprehensive CCTV surveillance system to monitor all 416 power sub-stations across the state. This move aims to enhance the safety and security of these critical infrastructure sites. The surveillance system will be operated from the company's headquarters, Shakti Bhawan, located in Jabalpur.

In addition to the existing drone security measures, high-performance HD cameras are being installed at a cost of approximately Rs 8.15 crore. The first phase includes the installation of cameras at around 250 sub-stations. These cameras will provide real-time footage to a central control center, as well as to substation, division, circle offices, and headquarters. Substation in-charges will also have live access to the footage on their mobile phones.

The need for increased security measures comes in response to incidents of theft, particularly the stealing of valuable and sensitive copper strips from power transformers. These copper strips are essential for neutralizing faults in transformers and sub-stations. Sunil Tiwari, Managing Director of MP Transco, explained that the new surveillance system will aid in providing necessary footage to police administrations following any theft incidents, potentially preventing losses of Rs 5 to 6 crore per transformer.
