Mitsubishi Electric Transfers Distribution Transformer Business to Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems

9 Apr 2024

Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation have announced the transfer of Mitsubishi Electric's distribution transformer business from its Nagoya Works to Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems, marking a significant collaboration between the two entities.

Scheduled to commence in October 2024 and culminate by April 1, 2026, the business transfer encompasses all aspects of the distribution transformer business, including development, design, manufacturing, sales, and maintenance. The move aims to leverage Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems' expertise to expand its product portfolio, focusing on energy-efficient and eco-friendly transformers, thus accelerating the growth of grid-edge solutions centered on power distribution systems, particularly in Japan's domestic market.

Distribution transformers play a vital role in power distribution by lowering the voltage of electricity from power plants to meet users' needs. With the global shift towards renewable energy and increasing power demands, the demand for power distribution transformers is expected to surge. This integration aligns with Japan's energy conservation goals, with a targeted improvement in energy consumption efficiency set by the Top Runner Program.

The collaboration between Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems and Mitsubishi Electric reflects a shared vision for advancing Japan's power transmission and distribution network towards sustainability. By combining their technologies and assets, the two companies aim to develop environmentally friendly products and contribute to Japan's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
