Middle Tennessee Electric (MTE) is undergoing a major operation to move its Owl Hollow substation from Franklin to Rutherford County.

The ambitious endeavor, set to take place on Tuesday, May 23, is expected to cause substantial traffic disruptions as the massive load travels along a 60-mile route spanning four counties.

The relocation of the substation is a state-permitted heavy-haul operation that will see the closure of Duplex Road and other key thoroughfares, including Lewisburg Pike, Nashville Highway, and Old Nashville Highway. The move, which is scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to minimize impact on school traffic and rush hour, is estimated to take two to three hours.

The purpose of the substation relocation is to facilitate the installation of an upgraded transformer at the Owl Hollow substation and expand the capacity of a substation in Rutherford County. These improvements are aimed at bolstering the electric grid's reliability, ensuring a more robust and efficient power supply for the region. Middle Tennessee Electric, the largest electric cooperative in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) region, serves over 750,000 Tennesseans through its extensive network covering 11 counties. The cooperative's subsidiary, United Communications, is also recognized for its broadband services across several counties.
