Met-Ed Completes Major Transformer Installation in Downtown Lebanon

9 Sep 2024
FirstEnergy's Pennsylvania Electric Company (Met-Ed) announced the successful energizing of a new transformer at the downtown Lebanon substation near Third and Willow streets. The new equipment is expected to improve electricity service for over 7,000 customers in Lebanon, North Lebanon Township, and West Lebanon Township.

The transformer installation was completed ahead of schedule to meet increased electrical demand during the summer heat and the upcoming winter season, according to Met-Ed spokesperson Todd Meyers. The previous transformer failed in early June and was beyond repair, leading to power outages throughout the summer. A mobile substation provided temporary service during the installation period.

"Crews worked diligently through heat waves to perform the necessary repairs," said Meyers, noting that large substation transformers are increasingly difficult to source due to extended lead times from manufacturers.

The Lebanon substation is critical to the underground distribution network that supplies much of the city's downtown, ensuring long-term grid stability and reliability.
