Meralco Enhances Grid Resilience with Quezon Substation Upgrade

24 Apr 2025
Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has upgraded its transformer at the Tayabas delivery point (DP) substation, tripling its capacity from 100 MVA to 300 MVA in response to increasing power demand in Quezon province and nearby areas in Laguna.

The upgrade aims to strengthen grid resilience by providing an N-1 contingency, which allows the system to continue operating even when a single component fails. Meralco noted that the enhanced 230 kV-115 kV substation is expected to improve efficiency with a projected reduction of 168,691.32 kilowatt-hours in system losses.

The improved substation will support consistent and stable power delivery to key customers, including SM City Lucena, Southern Luzon State University, Quezon Medical Center, and Tayabas Community Hospital, among others. It is also expected to accommodate future load growth in the area.

Froilan J. Savet, Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks, said the upgrade is part of broader infrastructure improvements to boost distribution reliability in fast-developing regions.

"This is one of many projects aimed at supporting continued economic growth through stable and sufficient power supply," Savet said.

Earlier this month, Meralco also energized a new 115 kV-34.5 kV substation in Hacienda Sta. Elena to improve power quality in Laguna and Cavite.
