Mehru Electrical and Hyosung Group Team Up on GIS Instrument Transformer Technology

1 Oct 2025
Mehru Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Quality Power Electrical Equipments Ltd (QPEEL), has signed a strategic co-development agreement with Hyosung T&D India Private Limited, the Indian arm of South Korea's Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation. The collaboration focuses on the joint development of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) instrument transformers, marking a notable milestone for India's electrical equipment sector.

The partnership combines Mehru's expertise in high-voltage instrument transformers with Hyosung's leadership in compact, eco-friendly GIS solutions, aiming to deliver internationally benchmarked components designed and manufactured in India. The initiative supports India's "Make in India" program and seeks to reduce dependency on imported GIS equipment from Europe, China, and Japan.

"By bringing advanced GIS technology to Indian manufacturing, we are creating new opportunities for exports, enabling true self-reliance, and elevating India's presence on the global map of transmission and distribution innovation," said Bharanidharan Pandyan, Joint Managing Director of QPEEL.

GIS technology offers a compact and reliable alternative to conventional air-insulated substations, with environmental and safety advantages. The global GIS market is projected to grow at 7-8% CAGR through 2030, driven by urban transmission, renewable energy integration, and grid modernization.

The agreement focuses on co-developing GIS instrument transformers that comply with IEC/IEEE international standards. Initial products are expected within 12 months, positioning Mehru Electrical as a key contributor to advanced grid solutions in India and abroad.

QPEEL, headquartered in India, operates in over 100 countries, while Hyosung Group, founded in 1966, employs 17,000 people and generates USD 16.5 billion annually.
