Mauritania Expands Nouakchott Power Grid with 40 New Substations
Mauritania has completed the construction of 40 transformer substations in Nouakchott as part of a broader effort to reinforce the capital’s electricity network. The project also includes the installation of 150 kilometers of electricity transmission lines, of which 73 kilometers have already been completed. The remaining sections are scheduled for completion between February and March 2026.
According to authorities, the grid reinforcement program also covers the deployment of 25 kilometers of 33 kV cables and 108 kilometers of 15 kV cables, alongside expanded maintenance operations across the urban power network. The upgrades are intended to improve system stability, reduce outages, and increase distribution capacity as demand continues to grow.
The infrastructure expansion coincides with Mauritania’s plans to transition toward gas-based power generation using resources from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas field. A 225 MW gas-fired power plant is currently under construction in N’Diago, with the facility expected to reduce reliance on heavy fuel oil and support industrial activity once operational.
In parallel, the government continues to subsidize energy prices to support household purchasing power, with significant public spending allocated to fuel and domestic cooking gas subsidies in 2024 and 2025.
