Massive Power Outage Hits Spain and Portugal

28 Apr 2025
Today, 28 April 2025, a widespread power outage struck Spain and Portugal on Monday, causing massive disruptions across both countries. Power grid operator Red Eléctrica confirmed blackouts nationwide in Spain, while E-Redes reported phased restoration efforts in Portugal.

The outage impacted major transportation hubs including Madrid-Barajas International Airport and Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport, with metros in Madrid, Lisbon, and Porto forced to halt operations. Traffic lights across both capitals failed, leading to severe traffic congestion, and telecommunications networks were also disrupted. Many businesses, restaurants, and events, including the Madrid Open tennis tournament, were suspended mid-activity.

Residents in Andorra and parts of southwestern France also reported blackouts, though service has since resumed in France. Preliminary investigations suggest potential faults in the European electricity grid, and a fire damaging high-voltage lines in southern France has been cited as a possible cause.

Spanish companies Endesa and Iberdrola are investigating alongside European authorities. Meanwhile, emergency sessions were convened by the Spanish government and the European Commission confirmed it is monitoring the situation closely.

Power restoration has begun in parts of Spain and Portugal, but authorities warn it may take time for full recovery.
