Major Substation Fire Erupts in Central London, Dozens Evacuated

29 Apr 2025
A major fire broke out early Tuesday morning at an electrical substation in Maida Vale, London, prompting the evacuation of around 80 residents and the deployment of over 100 firefighters.

According to the London Fire Brigade, the blaze started just before 5:30am at a substation on Aberdeen Place, quickly spreading to the roof of a nearby residential building. Fifteen fire engines responded from stations including Paddington and Euston, with over 170 emergency calls made regarding the incident.

"This is a very visible fire and producing lots of smoke," said Commander Paul Morgan, urging locals to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area near Warwick Avenue station.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. The incident follows a similar substation blaze in West London weeks earlier, which caused a power outage that shut down Heathrow Airport for over 15 hours and affected tens of thousands of households.

No injuries have been reported so far. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess structural damage to affected properties.
