LPEA Announces New Transformer Arrival for Pagosa Springs Substation in Colorado

19 Dec 2024
La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) has announced the arrival of a new transformer, marking a significant step toward constructing the cooperative's first new substation since 2008. This $6.5 million infrastructure project will enhance grid reliability and strengthen the electric system for the Pagosa Springs community.

The substation will increase operational flexibility, reduce service disruptions, and provide redundancy to minimize the impact of outages. Construction is set to begin in spring 2025, with completion expected by 2026.

"This new substation is part of our long-term strategy to invest in critical infrastructure that strengthens the reliability and resiliency of our electric grid," said Chris Hansen, LPEA CEO. "We are committed to ensuring the Pagosa Springs community receives the reliable service they depend on while planning for future needs."

With growing energy demands driven by the adoption of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and smart grid technologies, this substation will modernize the grid and integrate advanced capabilities.

La Plata Electric Association (LPEA), a member-owned cooperative, serves La Plata, Archuleta, and portions of Hinsdale, Mineral, and San Juan counties. As the fifth-largest of 22 cooperatives in Colorado, LPEA is committed to providing approximately 36,500 members with safe, reliable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost.
