Lithuania Secures Key Interconnection Sites Amid Regional Tensions

15 Jan 2025
Lithuania has enhanced security measures for the Alytus switchyard and transformer substation, key components of the LitPol Link interconnection with Poland. The LitPol Link serves as a vital energy bridge between the Baltic states and Poland, playing a key role in integrating the Baltic grids with the Continental European network.

The Public Security Service (VST) has assumed responsibility for protecting these facilities ahead of the Baltic grids' synchronization with the Continental European network in February 2025. Initially planned for April, this transition was expedited due to the strategic importance of these assets and heightened regional security concerns, particularly amid increased tensions with Russia.

Recent incidents, including damage to the EstLink 2 electricity cable, which facilitates power transfer between Finland and Estonia, in what is widely believed to have been an act of sabotage, and other critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea region, have highlighted vulnerabilities in critical systems.

By prioritizing the security of the transformer station and other vital energy sites, Lithuania is reinforcing its energy network's resilience and ensuring uninterrupted progress toward full synchronization with Europe.
