LG’s AI Robots Revolutionize Facility Diagnosis at POSCO Steel Plant

15 Nov 2023

LG Electronics' AI-based self-driving robot has showcased its potential for widespread use in facility diagnosis at hazardous worksites, as demonstrated during a successful two-day unmanned facility management trial at POSCO's Gwangyang steel plant. The robot autonomously patrolled the expansive electrical room, surpassing an area larger than two football fields, adeptly avoiding obstacles while inspecting the operating status of critical equipment like power cables, transformers, and reactors. The results were promptly relayed to LG's control room.

This collaborative project, part of the business agreement between LG Electronics and POSCO Holdings, marks a significant stride in smart factory technologies. Equipped with cameras and LiDAR sensors, the robot demonstrated a high recognition rate, even in challenging environments such as low-light basements or areas enclosed by safety fences. Enhanced with heatproof and cooling features, the robot proved its resilience in the demanding environment of a steel mill's electrical room.

Kim Byoung-hoon, Chief Technology Officer of LG Electronics, expressed the companies' commitment to advancing smart factory technologies. "We will enhance our technological capabilities further by verifying smart factory technologies such as robots, AI, and communications at various manufacturing sites. We will strengthen our manufacturing competitiveness with intelligent autonomous factory technology for the future," he stated.

LG and POSCO's collaboration aims to accelerate the development of more efficient and safer manufacturing sites, leveraging their respective expertise in smart factory technologies. The successful deployment of the AI-based robot underscores the potential for transformative advancements in facility management and diagnostic applications.
