Largest Nuclear Power Plant in Europe on Verge of Blackout After Attack on Substation

2 Oct 2024

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, is reportedly "on the verge" of a blackout following a Russian attack on a substation connected to the facility, according to Ukraine's Energy Ministry on October 1.

The attack resulted in the disconnection of a power line supplying the plant, prompting urgent efforts to restore full power. The ZNPP has been under occupation since March 2022, during which it has faced repeated disconnections from the Ukrainian power grid due to ongoing assaults on the country's energy infrastructure.

Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko stated the need for immediate implementation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution, emphasizing the importance of returning the occupied nuclear power plant under Ukraine's control for its safe operation.

The state nuclear energy company, Energoatom, noted that the plant has already experienced eight complete blackouts since the beginning of the conflict. Additionally, Ukraine's National Resistance Center reported on September 15 that military personnel and ammunition are being stored on the occupied power plant's territory, raising concerns about safety.
