KPDCL to Establish 7,000 New Transformer Substations in Kashmir Valley

6 Nov 2024
In a significant development for power infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) is setting up 7,000 new distribution transformer substations across the Kashmir Valley under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). This initiative is aimed at enhancing the reliability and quality of electricity in the region.

A spokesperson from KPDCL shared that the RDSS has been divided into 13 packages, with work being carried out by KPDCL in key districts such as Srinagar, Budgam, and Baramulla. The NTPC and PESL are also involved as Project Implementing Agencies (PIAs), handling additional districts like Ganderbal, Bandipora, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, and Anantnag.

This extensive project, valued at approximately $279 million USD (Rs 2,316 crore), also includes plans for introducing smart metering systems. The KPDCL aims to install 6.85 lakh consumer smart meters and 40,670 DT meters under the RDSS, targeting reduced transmission losses and improved billing accuracy. Additionally, 15,000 km of LT-AB cable and 1.5 lakh steel tubular poles will be laid across the Valley, strengthening the LT network for reliable, uninterrupted service.

To minimize interruptions, the KPDCL is notifying scheduled shutdowns in advance, ensuring that residents stay informed while the upgrades are implemented.
