Koncar Supports Ørsted’s CO₂ Hub with Transformer Delivery
Koncar D&ST, a subsidiary of Croatian electrical company Koncar, has delivered and commissioned a transformer for the Ørsted Kalundborg CO₂ Hub, a key carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Denmark led by Ørsted.
The transformer, a three-phase, dual-winding unit with an on-load tap changer, was installed at the Avedore power plant substation in early March 2025. With a capacity of 50 MVA and voltage rating of 10.5 kV, it features an ester-based insulating fluid that is biodegradable and lowers environmental risks in the case of leaks or failures.
The transformer supports the Kalundborg COâ‚‚ Hub, which plans to capture and store up to 430,000 tonnes of COâ‚‚ annually starting in 2026. This is equivalent to the yearly emissions from about 200,000 petrol-powered cars.
During the initial phase, before a CO₂ pipeline is completed across Zealand, captured emissions will be transported by truck to the Asnæs power plant. The site will act as a temporary onshore terminal for liquefied CO₂, which will later be shipped and stored in geological formations under the North Sea.
A second transformer, rated at 40 MVA and also using Midel 7131, is scheduled for delivery in November 2025 as part of the same project.
