KONČAR Produces Transformer for Sweden’s First Wooden Substation
KONČAR Group, Croatian manufacturer of power transformers and electrical equipment, announced that in January, their company KONČAR – Distribution and Special Transformers Inc. completed Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for a 10 MVA power transformer destined for an innovative grid project in southern Sweden, where it will be installed at the country’s first substation constructed primarily from wood.
The project reflects a broader push toward low-carbon energy infrastructure. The wooden design is expected to reduce the station’s carbon footprint by approximately 17%, supported by the use of reused materials, CO₂-reduced steel, and climate-improved concrete.
The transformer is filled with NYTRO® RR 900X, a re-refined insulating oil supplied by Nynas. Produced entirely from end-of-life oil, the fluid can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% compared to conventional alternatives.
All tests were conducted in accordance with IEC 60076, confirming the transformer’s performance, efficiency, and reliability ahead of installation.
