Končar Expands European Footprint with Major Elia Transformer Framework Deal

2 Jul 2026

Končar – Distributivni i specijalni transformatori (D&ST) has secured a new contract in Belgium worth more than $17 million (€15 million), supplying medium-power transformers to Elia Asset, a subsidiary of Belgium’s transmission system operator Elia. The agreement strengthens Končar’s position in Western Europe’s transmission equipment market, where grid reinforcement and replacement cycles continue to accelerate.

The contract scope covers the design, production, factory testing, delivery, unloading, and final installation of transformers at the customer’s site. The project is structured as a long-term supply arrangement, with deliveries planned between 2028 and 2032. The final value and volume of units may increase depending on future call-offs from the Belgian operator, leaving room for expansion beyond the initial framework.

The deal follows a series of recent international contracts for Končar D&ST, including agreements in the United Kingdom, Austria, and Germany. This sequence reflects sustained demand from European transmission operators investing in grid modernization, renewable integration, and replacement of aging infrastructure.

Belgium’s transmission operator plays a key role in adapting the national grid to rising electrification and renewable penetration. High-voltage and medium-power transformers remain central components in this transition, enabling stable voltage control and efficient long-distance electricity transfer across interconnected European networks.

The company positions the Belgian agreement as a strategic entry point into a demanding Western European market, where technical compliance, reliability, and long-term service capability are decisive factors in procurement decisions. The multi-year delivery window also provides production visibility and capacity planning stability for Končar’s manufacturing operations.

The Belgian contract adds to Končar’s growing order book in Europe’s high-voltage equipment segment, reinforcing its role as a supplier integrated into the continent’s energy transition supply chain.
