Kenya’s Power Grid Gets a Boost with 400 kV Mariakani-Isinya Transmission Line

28 Feb 2025
Kenya's power transmission network is set for a major upgrade with the completion of the Mariakani Power Substation, a critical component of the 400 kV Mombasa-Nairobi Transmission Line. The project, led by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), aims to enhance power supply reliability, reduce costs, and support industrial expansion in the coastal region.

During an inspection tour of the substation in Kilifi County, President William Ruto emphasized its importance in strengthening electricity transmission between Mombasa and Nairobi. The facility is expected to minimize reliance on costly diesel-powered generation while improving efficiency in power transfer between the two major cities.

The 400 kV Mariakani-Isinya Transmission Line, a key part of this initiative, is set to be completed by June 2025. The project is co-financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Kenya, with a total investment of $30,2 million.

.

According to KETRACO Managing Director Dr. Eng. John Mativo, the new infrastructure will also enhance power quality in the coastal region and provide stable electricity to the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone. Additionally, the importation of power from Ethiopia, combined with geothermal energy from Olkaria, will further improve grid stability.

The Mariakani substation is part of Kenya's broader energy expansion efforts, including its integration into the 220 kV Nairobi Metropolitan Ring. Once fully operational, it will play a vital role in ensuring reliable and cost-effective electricity for businesses and households.
