KEDCO and FEA Launch Transformer-Focused Mini-Grid in Jigawa, Nigeria
The Jigawa State Government, Nigeria, has inaugurated the FEA/KEDCO Solar Mini-Grid Project in Kafin Hausa, a USD 780 000 renewable energy initiative aimed at improving electricity access and powering 10 distribution transformers across the region.
Commissioned by Governor Malam Umar A. Namadi on August 31, the project was developed by Future Energies Africa (FEA)--a core investor in Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO)--through its renewable energy subsidiary, Bagaja Renewables Limited.
According to KEDCO, the mini-grid includes a 500kWp solar-hybrid generation system, backed by a 350MVA diesel generator, a 3.5 km 33kV distribution line, and infrastructure featuring 500kV step-up and step-down transformers. The project will energize major transformer sites at NEPA Office, Kofar Fada, Akarami, Bakin Kasuwa, and Ashura.
The system is expected to significantly reduce reliance on diesel generators, improve grid reliability, and support economic activities in Kafin Hausa and surrounding areas.
Governor Namadi lauded the project as a milestone in clean energy access, calling it "the ignition of opportunity, progress, and prosperity." He emphasized that energy access is critical to job creation, industrialization, and poverty alleviation in Jigawa.
Representing FEA, Ahmad Zakari said the hybrid solution "sets a new standard in electrification" by blending renewable and conventional power sources. Both KEDCO and FEA pledged continued investment in rural electrification across northern Nigeria.
The mini-grid aligns with Nigeria's Energy Transition Plan, which aims for 30% renewable energy by 2030.
