Kano State Distributes 500 Transformers to Boost Rural Electrification
Kano State (northern Nigeria) Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has distributed 500 electricity transformers to communities across all 44 local government areas of the state, as part of efforts to improve rural electrification.
The distribution ceremony took place at the Rural Electricity Board premises on Maganda Road, where Yusuf highlighted that the transformers--ranging from 200KVA to 500KVA--were sourced from reputable international manufacturers.
"This marks the first phase of the distribution of 500 units of various types of transformers across the 44 Local Government Areas," said Yusuf, emphasizing the initiative as a key campaign promise to enhance electricity access in underserved rural areas.
The project is being executed in collaboration with local government councils, with transformer allocations based on the specific power needs of each community.
Governor Yusuf stressed the importance of reliable electricity as a catalyst for economic growth, healthcare, education, and social wellbeing. He also urged communities to protect the transformers from vandalism and ensure proper maintenance for long-term sustainability.
In addition, the state electricity company has begun evacuating power from the 10MW Tiga Hydropower Plant to increase energy supply. Plans for further alternative energy projects aimed at supporting small and medium businesses were also announced.
Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Alhaji AbdulKadir Abdulsalam, described the intervention as a milestone for local institutions, while local government leaders and traditional rulers commended the state government's development pace.
