Installation Begins on South Australia’s Largest Electricity Transformers to Power Renewable Energy Highway

9 May 2023

Riverland, Australia - Installation has commenced on the Bundey substation in South Australia's Riverland, which will house the state's largest electricity transformers.

The transformers, weighing over 250 tonnes each, are a critical component of Project Energy Connect, a collaboration between South Australian electricity transmission operator ElectraNet and New South Wales' Transgrid. This ambitious project aims to enable power sharing and enhance renewable energy integration between the two states, with a capacity of 800MW along the 900-kilometer transmission line.

With over 50% of construction on the South Australian section already completed, the project remains on track for full completion by the end of 2023. ElectraNet's Chief Operating Officer, Rainer Korte, highlights that the interconnector will unlock renewable energy development, strengthen the power grid, and bring cost savings to customers. Initial power transfer is expected to commence in mid-2024, marking a significant milestone in achieving a more sustainable and interconnected energy infrastructure.
