India’s Grid Set for Boost with Hitachi Energy’s 765 kV Transformers

26 Jun 2025
Hitachi Energy India has secured a major order from the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) to deliver 30 units of 765-kilovolt (kV), 500 megavolt-ampere (MVA) single-phase transformers. This marks a significant development in India's efforts to enhance grid capacity and meet rising electricity demands fueled by the energy transition.

The transformers, to be manufactured at Hitachi Energy India's Vadodara facility, will play a critical role in improving grid reliability and efficiency. Once deployed, these ultra-high-voltage transformers will be capable of transmitting power equivalent to the average consumption of 30 million Indian households.

India's growing integration of renewable energy and electrification of key sectors has led to a 15% annual rise in demand for power transformers over the past two years. In response, utilities like POWERGRID are shifting from project-based planning to a more strategic, program-based approach for long-term grid development.

Higher voltage infrastructure such as 765 kV allows bulk power transmission over long distances, reducing energy losses and operational costs, while also lowering land use and environmental impact.

N Venu, Managing Director & CEO of Hitachi Energy India, emphasized that the project highlights the company's dual strength in global technology and local manufacturing capabilities.
