11 Oct 2021

CHILE & SPAIN -- the project is supposed to equip regions of high power demand with technology capable of supporting the connection of renewable energy.

Chile's National Electric Coordinator has chosen a consortium of companies led by Iberdrola to participate in a tender to build and operate a high-voltage direct current transmission line.  The consortium known as Meval, includes Iberdrola's transmission arm, Iberdrola Redes España, as well as the energy investment company Celeo.

The project will include the construction of two alternating current / direct current converter stations at the Kimal substation in Antofagasta and the Lo Aguirre substation in the Metropolitana region and the new 600kV HVDC 1,500km (933 miles) of HVDC line, which will connect the two substations. On top of the construction work the region's existing power stations are also to be upgraded.

The entire investment is estimated at a total of more than $2.5 billion and is supposed to equip regions of high power demand with technology capable of supporting the connection of renewable energy.
