Hydro-Québec Opens Des Irlandais Substation

11 Oct 2024
Hydro-Québec has commissioned the Des Irlandais substation in Montréal's Le Sud-Ouest borough, a $215-million project that will meet growing electricity demand in Griffintown and west of downtown. This substation will also supply power to the Réseau électrique métropolitain (REM) and provide electricity to approximately 80,000 homes, supporting the energy transition and contributing to the decarbonization of Montréal.

As part of the project, Hydro-Québec is donating a portion of land to the Montreal Irish Monument Park Foundation to create a memorial site commemorating the 6,000 Irish immigrants who died of typhus in Montréal in 1847. The site, expected to be inaugurated within five years, will honor their legacy and the solidarity shown by Montrealers during the crisis.
