Hydro One and Alectra Utilities collaborate on a substation repair project in Ontario

11 May 2021

ONTARIO -- Hydro One and Alectra Utilities are collaborating on a multi-million-dollar Newton Transformer Station repair project in Hamilton.

Hydro One and Alectra crews are collaborating to repair aging infrastructure at the Newton Transformer Station in Hamilton's west end.

Hydro One crews will replace up to 30 insulators at the station that are more than 70 years old.

In order to alleviate service interruptions during repairs, Hydro One and Alectra are bringing in a Mobile Transformer Unit. This solution will supply the 8,500 customers who would have otherwise been without power during the critical repair period.

Alectra's distribution system and the Hydro One Transformer Station require upgrading so they can serve the increasing demand of the Hamilton community. This project will provide improved reliability and potentially avoid future unplanned loss of supply events, Hydro One said in a press release.

Initially scheduled for December, the project was delayed to the spring to minimize disruption to homes and businesses during the repairs.
