Hungary’s First Digital Twin Transformer Marks a New Era in Energy Management

25 Mar 2024

Hungary is set to enter a new era in energy management with the imminent commissioning of its first state-of-the-art transformer equipped with a digital twin. Developed through collaboration between Ganz Transformers and Electric Rotating Machines Ltd. (Ganz) and E.ON Hungary Ltd., the 40 MVA transformer represents a significant advancement in power system technology. Scheduled to be operational in Budapest's XI. district by the summer of 2024, this milestone underscores the increasing importance of digital solutions in enhancing energy infrastructure.

The global rise in electricity consumption, coupled with the integration of renewable energy sources, has amplified the need for modernizing power systems. The delivery of Hungary's inaugural digital twin transformer signifies a pivotal step in meeting these evolving energy demands. With a focus on extending the lifespan of energy systems, Ganz has introduced GANZ Intelligent Solutions, utilizing intelligent sensors to monitor machine conditions and preempt potential failures.

Traditional transformers, regardless of age, pose operational risks that can lead to substantial losses in power generation and distribution. GANZ Intelligent Solutions leverages digital monitoring to detect early signs of failure, minimizing downtime and maintenance costs. This innovative approach not only benefits new transformer installations but also offers retrofit capabilities for existing equipment, promising enhanced efficiency and longevity for Hungary's energy infrastructure.

Gábor Farkas, Intelligent Solutions Brand Manager at Ganz, highlights the significance of this collaboration in adapting to dynamic energy sector challenges. Amidst increasing economic volatility and renewable energy integration, Ganz remains committed to delivering agile solutions. As the industry embraces digital transformation, the incorporation of digital twin technology heralds a more resilient and efficient energy landscape for Hungary and beyond.
