Huge transformer arrives at National Grid’s Bicker Fen onshore substation

14 Oct 2019

LINCOLNSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM - A large power transformer has been successfully transported from the port at Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire to Bicker Fen substation as part of an ongoing upgrade project.

National Grid is installing additional electrical equipment at the substation to be able to connect the proposed Triton Knoll wind farm to the national grid, the company states on the website.

The transformer, longer than two red London buses, arrived at the port from Austria, where it was manufactured. The second of the two transformers will be delivered next Sunday.

The Triton Knoll wind farm will be located off the Lincolnshire coast and, once fully operational, it will provide enough clean energy to power at least 800,000 UK homes.

Construction of the substation is due to be completed in 2020.
