Hitachi to Provide Grid Transformers in Finnish Battery Storage Facility
Hitachi Energy has signed an agreement with Nordic Electro Power (NEPower) to supply electrical equipment for Finland’s largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a 125 MW / 250 MWh project under construction in Haapajärvi.
The facility is being developed by Alpiq and will participate in Finland’s reserve power market operated by Fingrid. The project is intended to support grid balancing as electricity generation and consumption fluctuate.
Under the agreement, Hitachi Energy will provide several key components, including power transformers, a Power Conversion System (PCS), Ring Main Units (RMUs), a Power Plant Controller (PPC), and a SCADA-based energy management system. The delivery scope also includes installation monitoring, commissioning, maintenance, and system integration support.
The power transformers will be used to connect the battery system to the grid and manage voltage levels between the storage facility and the transmission network. According to the companies, the equipment is designed for Nordic operating conditions and supports high availability and grid stability.
Construction of the Haapajärvi battery storage facility is currently underway. Commissioning of the project is scheduled for mid-2027.
